For any specific date, you can select and compare two VMs (including templates) to determine the differences between them. For example, you can compare a parent VM to its child VM or two sibling VMs to each other. This allows you to see, for example, if each VM has the same version of applications on a specific date or if one VM has been patched and the other has not.

You can also compare what changes have occurred on one VM between two different dates (the "drift").

Selecting VMs for comparison

Access through:

Tools > Compare

Available to:

Administrator and All Operator Levels of Access Rights

You can select two VMs for comparison in the following ways:

from the Operational or VMs and Templates tree

from the Datastore tree if you have scanned your datastores (this also allows you to compare out-of-inventory VMs)

from the Virtual Machines tab

in the Compare window by clicking vm-16x16, navigating to the VM's location in the tree, and clicking OK; repeat for the second VM

If you select a VM directly from the Operational or VMs and Templates tree or from the Graphical Lineage tab, you can right-click, click Change Management, and then click one of the following commands:

Compare - Drift: to compare the VM to itself based on a difference of date

Compare - Select as Left: to display the VM in the left-hand comparison panel (use this command and go to the Compare window, or select another VM and use Select as Right)

Compare - Select as Right: to display the VM in the right-hand comparison panel (use this command and go to the Compare window, or select another VM and use Select as Left)

Compare - To Parent: to compare the VM to its parent

If you select two VMs from the Virtual Machines tab, you also have the option of using the command Compare - Each Other which automatically displays the two VMs in the Compare window.

Running the VM comparison

Access through:

Tools > Compare

Available to:

Administrator and All Operator Levels of Access Rights

You can compare two different VMs or the same VM with a different date. Running the comparison shows you the difference between them. To compare two VMs, follow this procedure.

1.Select the VMs using the method of your choice (see Selecting VMs for Comparison above).

2.Select or change the date for which you want the comparison to take place.

3.Select any or all of the compare options such as configuration, lifecycle, resources, OS details, applications, services, hotfixes.

4.Click Compare.

The results of the comparison are displayed under a separate Results tab. If you are comparing the same VM with a different date, the default is set to display differences only. To display the differences, disable Only show differences.

5.On the Compare Results tab, expand any of the options titles to see the details of the results.

If differences exist between the two VMs, the option title is highlighted and a number in brackets is displayed beside it which indicates the number of differences the comparison has discovered.

6.To change the comparison parameters, click Edit Query which results opens a new Compare Results tab.
