Managing Reserved Instance Recommendations

Embotics® vCommander® issues recommendations to purchase Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances, which provide a significant discount compared with on-demand pricing. Based on your Amazon EC2 instance uptime, vCommander recommends EC2 Reserved Instance purchases for each region and shows you the projected savings for each purchase.

Recommendations are based on VM history data (costs are calculated based on VM uptime and the applied cost model) or, if an hourly AWS billing data was retrieved, on AWS billing data.

Important: To use Reserved Instance Recommendations, you must retrieve an hourly AWS billing report.

About cloud cost optimization

To benefit most from vCommander cloud cost optimization, carry out the steps in the following order:

Apply rightsizing recommendations

Apply and configure power schedule recommendations

Use Reserved Instance recommendations or the Reserved Instance Planner report to guide your RI purchases

Monitor and repeat

If you begin with RI planning, you may end up purchasing the wrong size or quantity of RIs, which can be an expensive mistake.

Cost optimization is an ongoing, iterative process. Once you've rightsized, set power schedules and purchased RIs, it's critical to monitor your AWS infrastructure and your bill, and continually optimize.

Watch our Cloud Cost Optimization video to learn about the features that work together to reduce your cloud costs.

Customizing the rules used for Reserved Instance recommendations

Access through:

Configuration menu > Costs > RI Recommendation Configuration tab

Available to:

vCommander Role of Superuser, Enterprise Admin

To customize the settings used to generate Reserved Instance purchase recommendations:

1.Go to Configuration > Costs and navigate to the RI Recommendation Configuration tab.

2.Report Period: By default, RI recommendations are based the last 30 days of uptime data. Select a report period of 7, 30, 60 or 90 days. The period ends at midnight on the day before the report is run (in contrast to other vCommander reports).

3.Purchase Model: By default, RI recommendations display cost savings based on the No Upfront purchase model. Select one of the following purchase models:

All Upfront: Pay for the entire reservation term in one upfront payment. Offers the highest savings rate.

Partial Upfront: Pay for part of the reservation term in an upfront payment, then pay the remainder in monthly installments. Costs more than All Upfront, but less than No Upfront.

No Upfront: Pay for the reservation in monthly installments throughout the term's duration. Offers the lowest savings rate.

4.Limit Spending To: By default, RI recommendations assume no spending limit. When you enter a value in this field, the report will cap the spending at the specified limit. This option is useful if you already know the amount you can spend on Reserved Instances. A zero or blank value in this field means that there is no spending limit, and all purchase recommendations are included in the report, regardless of cost.

5.Required Savings %: By default, vCommander must determine that a Reserved Instance purchase will save you at least 20% over the on-demand cost in order to recommend a purchase. Enter a different percentage if desired.

6.Click Save Settings.
